Fall League 2002 - Details

Who Can Play?

Anyone is welcome to play in Fall League. You don't need to be a student, you don't need to know how to play ultimate, you don't even need to know anybody else who plays. One of the main purposes of Fall League is to introduce new players to a sport that many of us already love. There's no reason to be shy if you haven't played before. As long as you fill out and sign your registration/waiver form, submit it and pay your entry fee, you're in.

New in 2002

There will be two divisions in this years Fall League: Sunday Division and Monday/Wednesday Division. Sunday Division will play every Sunday afternoon at 3pm from September 8 until November 3. Monday/Wednesday Division will play at 6pm every Monday and Wednesday from September 4 until October 16. We know that it will be getting dark earlier and earlier, so we'll start Monday/Wednesday Division games promptly at 6, and play 'til it's too dark to play. If you have trouble getting to the fields by 6pm, it's probably better to stick with Sunday Division. Also note that the Monday/Wednesday Division is one division with one set of teams, i.e. there is no way to sign up to play only on Monday (though, of course, you can sign up and then just miss most Wednesday games, if you like).

How much does it cost?

The entry fee per division per person is as follows: Please make checks payable to "AAUSL". The cost of the league should not preclude anyone from playing. If the registration fee causes financial difficulty, please contact Brian Amer ( brianamer@yahoo.com).

Dates to Remember

Equipment You Will Need

You'll need a white t-shirt and a dark-colored t-shirt. In each game, each team wears a different colored shirt to make it easy to tell who is on which team. A disc (the Discraft 175g Ultrastar is standard) would be nice so you can practice throwing when you're not playing in Fall League -- we'll have some for sale at the fields. A pair of soccer style cleats would also be nice so you have some traction. Shorts are recommended since we really don't want to see anyone wreck their favorite pair of pants, though skirts are stylish in this sport for both men and women. Please also bring water to drink.

Weather

Ultimate is fun on a warm sunny day. Ultimate is fun in the rain. Ultimate is fun on windy days. We will try to play in all weather and there will be no officially schedule makeup games, though captains may arrange a makeup. If we feel that our games would damage the fields, we will cancel the games. Also, the games will be canceled for potentially dangerous weather such as a tornado or lightning.

The Rules in Fall Ultimate

Normal co-ed rules of Ultimate will be used for Fall League, with heavy emphasis on Spirit of the Game. Games will be played to 15 points (win by 2, cap at 17).

If you're not familiar with the rules of ultimate, you can check out some simplified rules of Ultimate. If you can't get to sleep at night, you can always check out the complete rules. All Fall League games are played according to the 10th edition rules, with only a few minor modifications.

Except at the highest levels of competition, ultimate is generally played without referees. This works surprisingly well, because (a) the rules are pretty simple, and (b) there's a very high level of sportsmanship among ultimate players that we like to call "the Spirit of the Game." This means that while intense and athletic play is encouraged, intentional fouling and play that is dangerous to others are considered gross offenses against the spirit of sportsmanship. Because there are no referees policing our behavior in this league, it is especially important that all players uphold their responsibilities to play honestly, fairly, and safely.

In Fall League, we insist on great spirit from all teams. This means making sure players of all skill levels get plenty of chances to catch the disc, a positive attitude toward opponents, cheering the other team after every game, and showing lots of respect to players on both teams who are beginners.
